If you just received a new BMO credit card or debit card in the mail, you need to activate it before making any purchases or withdrawals. This guide walks first-time card holders and existing BMO customers through every step: from opening the envelope to your first successful transaction.

When your new BMO card arrives, your package should include:
  • Your new BMO credit card or debit card
  • A welcome letter with your card number and account details
  • Instructions for activation (the package will reference bmo.com/activate)
  • A separate PIN mailer (for debit cards) or instructions for selecting a PIN
If you did not receive all items or if the package appears tampered with, call BMO immediately at 1-877-225-5266 (credit) or 1-800-363-9992 (debit) before activating.

Step 2: Activate Your Card Online

The fastest way to activate your new BMO card is at bmo.com/activate.

Visit bmo.com/activate

Go to https://www.bmo.com/activate on any browser.

Sign in to BMO online banking

Enter your BMO username and password. If you have never used BMO online banking before, click Register Now and follow the steps to enroll.

Enter your card details

Provide your card number, expiry date, and CVV when prompted.

Confirm activation

Click Activate Now and wait for the confirmation. Your card is immediately active.

Step 3: Set Up Your PIN

After activating your card, set up your PIN at any BMO ATM:

Find a BMO ATM

Use the BMO branch and ATM locator at bmo.com to find a nearby ATM.

Insert your card and enter the temporary PIN

If you received a temporary PIN in a separate envelope, enter it now.

Select a new PIN

Follow the ATM prompts to choose a new 4-digit PIN. Avoid obvious combinations like your birth year or repeated digits.

Step 4: Register for Online Banking (If You Haven’t Already)

If this is your first BMO card or you have never used BMO online banking, register at bmo.com to manage your card, view statements, and set up alerts.
After activating your new BMO card and setting your PIN, consider adding it to Apple Pay or Google Pay for convenient contactless payments.
