You can activate your BMO debit card using several convenient methods. BMO Bank of Montreal gives you the flexibility to activate your card at a BMO ATM, through BMO online banking, by calling customer service, or in person at a branch. This guide covers every activation method so you can choose the one that works best for you.

For most BMO debit cards and access cards, activation happens when you complete your first PIN selection at a BMO ATM. This is the most common and secure method.

Find a BMO ATM

Locate a BMO Bank of Montreal ATM near you using the BMO branch locator.

Insert your card

Insert your new BMO debit card into the ATM. The machine will recognize that it needs activation.

Set your PIN

Follow the prompts to create a secure 4-digit PIN. You must enter it twice to confirm.

Complete a transaction

Withdraw cash, check your balance, or complete another transaction to finalize the activation. Your card is now ready for use.

Visit bmo.com/activate

Go to the official BMO card activation URL: www.bmo.com/activate. Sign in to BMO online banking.

Select your card

Choose the debit card or access card you want to activate from your account dashboard.

Confirm activation

Click Activate Now and follow the on-screen prompts. Some cards still require you to set your PIN at a BMO ATM afterward.

If you prefer phone activation, BMO customer service can assist you.

  1. Dial the BMO debit card activation phone number: 1-800-363-9992.
  2. Follow the automated prompts or speak with a representative.
  3. Provide your card number and verify your identity.
  4. Confirm activation when prompted.
Some BMO debit cards still require you to set your PIN at a BMO ATM even after phone activation.

If you need help in person, visit any BMO Bank of Montreal branch.

  1. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and your new debit card.
  2. Speak with a bank teller or customer service representative.
  3. They will activate your card and assist with PIN setup if needed.
If you are activating a replacement BMO debit card, your old card will be deactivated once the new card is successfully activated. Destroy and discard your old card safely.
You must activate your BMO debit card before you can use it for purchases, ATM withdrawals, or online transactions. Do not share your PIN with anyone.
