This usually means the 16-digit card number was entered incorrectly or the card is not yet registered in BMO’s system. How to fix it:
- Re-enter the full 16-digit card number shown on the front of your card (no spaces).
- Double-check the expiry date and the CVV on the back or front of the card.
- If you just received the card in the mail, wait 24 hours and try again to allow BMO’s system to register it.

- Check the expiry date printed on the front of your card (month/year).
- If the card is expired, request a replacement card by signing in to BMO Online Banking or calling BMO.
- When your new card arrives, go to https://www.bmo.com/activate and activate the replacement card.

If you are trying to activate through BMO Online Banking and cannot sign in, the issue is with your banking credentials, not the activation itself. How to fix it:
- Visit the BMO sign-in page and click Forgot your password? to reset your password.
- If BMO Online Banking is temporarily down, try activating by phone by calling the automated BMO card activation line.
- You can also activate directly at bmo.com/activate without signing in to Online Banking using your card details.
My card is damaged or the chip is not reading
My card is damaged or the chip is not reading
Physical damage (scratches, cracked chip, bent card) can prevent BMO’s system from recognizing your card during activation. How to fix it:
- Visually inspect the card for cracks, heavy scratches, or a bent corner.
- Try activation online at bmo.com/activate first (this does not require the card chip to be read by a terminal).
- If online activation also fails due to card-read errors, request a replacement card.
Most BMO card activation failures are resolved by carefully re-entering your card details. The automated activation line is available 24/7 and may be a quicker option if the website is experiencing temporary issues.
