1

Receive and inspect your new card

Once your new or replacement BMO debit card arrives by mail, check that your name is printed correctly and the envelope has not been tampered with. The card should be attached to a letter with activation instructions.

2

Choose your activation method

You have three ways to activate your BMO new debit card: online at www.bmo.com/activate, by calling the BMO card activation number, or at a BMO ATM. Pick the method that is most convenient for you.

Online

Visit bmo.com/activate and sign in to BMO online banking activate card services

By Phone

Call 1-800-363-9992 (BMO card activation phone number for banking/debit)

At ATM

Insert your card at any BMO ATM and follow the prompts to set your PIN
3

Activate online or by phone

If activating online, go to bmo.com/activate, sign in, select your new card, and click Activate Now. If activating by phone, call 1-800-363-9992, enter your card number, and follow the automated instructions or speak with a representative to complete BMO activate card.

4

Set or confirm your PIN at a BMO ATM

Most BMO debit cards require you to set your PIN at a BMO ATM before the card is fully active. Insert your card, select the PIN setup option, and enter a secure 4-digit PIN twice. Then complete a small transaction (like a balance inquiry) to confirm activation.

If you already set a PIN through the BMO app or online banking, you may only need to confirm it at the ATM.
5

Enable online and contactless purchases

Log in to BMO online banking or open the BMO mobile app. Go to your card settings and enable online purchases, tap payments, and international transactions if needed. This step is optional but recommended so you can use your card everywhere.

6

Destroy your old card

Once you confirm your new BMO debit card activation is successful, cut up your old card through the chip and magnetic stripe. Dispose of the pieces in separate trash bins to protect your account information.

Your old card will stop working as soon as your new card is activated. Do not attempt to use it after activation.
If you are a new BMO account holder activating your first debit card, BMO online banking activate card may require you to complete identity verification before you can sign in. Have your account details and identification ready.
