# BMO Card Activation Failed: How to Fix It

> BMO card activation failed? Common causes include incorrect card details, account holds, or expired cards. Solutions and BMO support contact included.

If your BMO card activation failed at **bmo.com/activate**, the most common causes are typos in your card information, an expired card, a temporary hold on your account, or a damaged card chip. In most cases, you can fix the issue yourself in a few minutes by verifying your details and trying again.

If activation continues to fail after double-checking everything, use the troubleshooting steps below for the specific error or behavior you are seeing.

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="I entered my card number and it says 'Invalid card number'">
    This usually means the 16-digit card number was entered incorrectly or the card is not yet registered in BMO's system.

    **How to fix it:**

    1. Re-enter the full 16-digit card number shown on the front of your card (no spaces).
    2. Double-check the expiry date and the CVV on the back or front of the card.
    3. If you just received the card in the mail, wait 24 hours and try again to allow BMO's system to register it.

    **When to call BMO:** If the error persists after 24 hours and you have confirmed the number matches your physical card exactly, call BMO credit card support at **1-877-225-5266** or BMO debit/banking at **1-800-363-9992**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My card is expired">
    BMO will not allow activation of an expired card. If your card expiry date has passed, you cannot activate it.

    **How to fix it:**

    1. Check the expiry date printed on the front of your card (month/year).
    2. If the card is expired, request a replacement card by signing in to BMO Online Banking or calling BMO.
    3. When your new card arrives, go to [**https://www.bmo.com/activate**](https://www.bmo.com/activate) and activate the replacement card.

    **When to call BMO:** Call immediately if your card arrived already expired or if you have not received a replacement you were expecting. Credit cards: **1-877-225-5266**. Debit/banking: **1-800-363-9992**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My account is locked or on hold">
    If your BMO account has a temporary security hold, fraud alert, or past-due balance, activation may be blocked.

    **How to fix it:**

    1. Sign in to BMO Online Banking or open the BMO mobile app and check for any account alerts, messages, or holds.
    2. If you see an outstanding balance or past-due payment, bring your account to good standing before trying to activate.
    3. If you see a security hold, follow the instructions in the alert or contact BMO to verify your identity.

    **When to call BMO:** If there is a fraud alert or security lock you cannot clear online, call the appropriate support line. Credit cards: **1-877-225-5266**. Debit/banking: **1-800-363-9992**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="BMO Online Banking is not working or I forgot my password">
    If you are trying to activate through BMO Online Banking and cannot sign in, the issue is with your banking credentials, not the activation itself.

    **How to fix it:**

    1. Visit the BMO sign-in page and click **Forgot your password?** to reset your password.
    2. If BMO Online Banking is temporarily down, try activating by phone by calling the automated BMO card activation line.
    3. You can also activate directly at **bmo.com/activate** without signing in to Online Banking using your card details.

    **When to call BMO:** If you are locked out of Online Banking and password reset fails, call BMO debit/banking at **1-800-363-9992**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My card is damaged or the chip is not reading">
    Physical damage (scratches, cracked chip, bent card) can prevent BMO's system from recognizing your card during activation.

    **How to fix it:**

    1. Visually inspect the card for cracks, heavy scratches, or a bent corner.
    2. Try activation online at **bmo.com/activate** first (this does not require the card chip to be read by a terminal).
    3. If online activation also fails due to card-read errors, request a replacement card.

    **When to call BMO:** If the card arrived damaged, call right away for a free replacement. Credit cards: **1-877-225-5266**. Debit/banking: **1-800-363-9992**.
  </Accordion>

<Note>
  Most BMO card activation failures are resolved by carefully re-entering your card details. The automated activation line is available 24/7 and may be a quicker option if the website is experiencing temporary issues.
